Throwaway Moms: Maternal Incarceration and the Criminalization of Female Poverty

Using a feminist standpoint epistemological framework, this article reports the findings from 26 interviews with drug-offending incarcerated mothers in Kentucky regarding the effects of incarceration on their relationships with their children. The participants related personal histories characterized by poverty, victimization, chronic substance addiction, and repeated failed attempts at sobriety. Many felt betrayed by the courts and child protective services, and those who had lost custody of their children felt they had no remaining reason to rehabilitate themselves.

Living With Stigma: Women's Experiences of Prostitution and Substance Use

Interpretive phenomenology was used to analyze interviews with 14 women who were recruited from a Midwestern program that provides prostitution-specific services. The participants described day-to-day experiences living with labeling, violence, and discrimination that were directed at them because of their involvement in prostitution and substance use. They also discussed their perceptions of being altered permanently by their activities as well as the ways in which they resist internalizing the negative messages that were directed at them.

Gender Disparity and HIV Risk Among Young Black Women in College: A Literature Review

This review article explores the issue of the gender-ratio imbalance among African American college students and its effect on the HIV risk behavior of young Black women in college. The theory of gender and power is used as a conceptual framework. The authors strive to show that there is a significant need for practitioners and researchers to develop and provide holistic gender-specific and culturally competent HIV prevention services for this unique population that reduce power differentials and challenge social norms.

Targeting Women Versus Addressing Gender in Microcredit: Lessons From Honduras

Microcredit, the practice of extending small loans to women who work in the informal economy, aims to help women achieve financial empowerment and independence. The research on microcredit, however, has tended to ignore how the context of women’s household relations can complicate this goal. This report of an ethnographic study of women’s participation in microcredit in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, indicates that male partners’ behaviors can both facilitate and limit women’s use of loans and repayment strategies.

The Complexities of Becoming Visible: Reflecting on the Stories of Women of Color as Social Work Educators

It is a reflection on the struggles, sustaining forces, and legacy passed on by women of color, who are social work educators to future generations of women. Framed by feminist theory and the theory of intersectionality, the narratives of 16 women of color are points of reflection. The findings of their narratives affirm multiple barriers and challenges, sustaining forces, and the legacy passed on by these pioneers to future generations.
